Restoring Beauty With Rhythm

Wednesdays, April 14, 21 & 28
6-8:30 pm

Recognizing the vital relationship of beauty and health, we will explore ways in which we live, feel, and look - offering ways to help us restore balance and rhythm to our lives.  As we question some of our contemporary notions of beauty, this class will encourage us to find and nurture the authentic, lasting beauty innate within ourselves.

Together we will explore the threefold nature of life (thinking, feeling, and action) through the lens of a deeply embedded cultural myth/fairytale.  We will engage in practical exercises that awaken us to a heartfelt, dynamic form of thinking that renews creativity and restores healing to daily life.

This threefold nature can be seen in the skin as well.  We will look at the healing qualities of special plants and show how each of the three parts of the plant is symbiotic with the human body and skin.

Authentic Beauty is healing - and healing leads to a greater beauty.  With guidance for healing your skin and restoring its healthy glow, we will share and experience in cultivating inner-peace and emotional balance through tuning our ears to our body's internal rhythms and learning practical ways to care for oneself in loving and compassionate ways, all providing for a healthier lifestyle -which in turn, encourages one's natural beauty to shine forth, star-like, from within.

This workshop will be divided into three Wednesdays, weaving together a broad picture of the threefold nature of life, the physical attributes of the skin and the plants that assist bringing it into balance.

Presented by Kerri Ward Merrill and Melodee Hansen. Kerri has been a certified Dr. Hauschka esthetician for 13 years and has travelled to Germany twice for advanced training at the WALA gardens. She has enjoyed sharing her knowledge with all ages. Melodee Hansen is a certified Dr. Hauschka esthetician with a background in anthroposophy. Making Plant Medicine Series

Thursdays: May 13, 20, 27
6-9 pm

Take one class or the whole series!

Class 1: Herbs on the Inside―Teas and Tinctures

We will look at a few of the most basic forms of medicine: herbal infusions, decoctions, tinctures and glycerites. This may sound simple but there is actually much you can do to ensure maximum extractions to make the strongest medicines for you and your family. We will talk about the pros and cons of teas and tinctures and discuss which form might be the best extraction method for a particular plant. Specific plant constituents will be discussed along with how to maximize these active constituents in your medicine. There will be a tincture-making demonstration and medicine-tasting. Leave with some informative handouts and a solid, basic understanding of how to make good teas and tinctures from dried or fresh herbs. It’s a fun and economical activity that helps you put your health even more in your hands.

Class 2: Herbs on the Outside--Infused Oils, Home Hydrosols, Salves, Lotions and Liniments

Explore the various ways of using herbs externally to maintain health and balance. Learn about infusing oils with plants, making home hydrosols (a very underutilized and wonderful medicine) and then turning these products into even fancier salves and lotions. We will also discuss the role of tinctures (liniments) externally. A medicine demo will be included and some recipes provided. Leave with strong tools to begin your fun journey into the messy world of external medicines!

Class 3: Traditional Secrets-–Herbs as Food

Too often we think of herbal medicines only as teas, tincture or pills. But traditionally people found all sorts of creative ways to incorporate health-enhancing plants into their diet. Come try really fun ways to take medicines like herbal honeys, vinegars, syrups, raw herb infested chocolates, nettle spritzers, real root beer and more. Recipes will be provided and we will have fun tasting and talking about herbs as a life way not just as “medicine”.

All classes will be taught by Lina, a Radiance employee and local herbal educator.
